Falmouth University Graduate Shorts Commission 2023

Screen Cornwall are pleased to work closely with Falmouth University’s School of Film & Television to help students transition into working life and find opportunities to develop their skills in industry through their Sound/Image Cinema Lab. This includes our annual open call for graduate and alumni short film funding which is now open.

We are looking for teams graduating in 2023 and alumni who have projects that offer diverse and bold storytelling, rooted in Cornwall. Projects should be filmed in the region, with the highest standards of COVID safety and the lightest carbon footprint. Previously successful applicants have gone on to create projects that have been co-funded by BFI Network and achieved festival success.

This year there are 3 opportunities for funding:

For all SOFT alumni:
£5,000 funding for a scripted short

For 2023 graduates:
£3,000 scripted short film
£3,000 documentary or experimental film

You will need to provide the following:

·       Answers to a number of short questions about the project.

·       Script (if narrative) or detailed treatment (doc, experimental).

·       Details of your team, including any Falmouth University alumni involved. At a minimum, you need to identify a writer, director and producer at the application stage although these roles can be combined if you have a clear justification.

·       Any additional funding you have raised or plan to raise.

Deadline for applications: 9am on Wednesday 24th May 2023

Guidelines:

·       The judging panel will comprise of representatives from SOFT, Screen Cornwall and at least one guest industry judge in each category. The decisions of the judges are final. Neither correspondence nor discussion concerning any decision shall be entered into.

·       Please note that due to a high volume of applications expected we may not be able to offer individual feedback on your application.

·       Funding will be issued with 80% on signature of the contract letter and 20% on delivery of the final film. Additional funding may be raised to increase the budget and this should be detailed in the application.

·       An executive producer will be assigned to the successful films and regular updates on progress will be an expected part of the process.

·       All projects will be expected to embrace sustainable production and use the Albert carbon calculator system through Screen Cornwall.

·       SOFT may be able to provide further support through in-kind use of kit and post-production facilities however this must be negotiated by the production team on a case by case basis and availability should not be assumed.

·       Films should be delivered by 31st May 2024,, unless there are reasonable circumstances for delay – additional funding plans should be included in the application, including projected timescales for application/decision (grant funding etc.)

·       Filmmakers should ensure there is budget available for festival entries at the end of the process and this should be included in the initial budget plan.
