Location of the month - Summerleaze and Crooklets
Sitting less than five minutes walk from the centre of Bude, sheltered Summerleaze is an expansive, golden sandy beach, with a large breakwater jutting out, designed to protect the mouth of the Bude canal and the small harbour nestled inside. The beach is bordered by the River Neet to the west, which flows through the town before running parallel to Summerleaze and emptying into the sea. At the foot of the cliffs is a 1930's sea pool, with brightly coloured beach huts tucked into the surrounding cliffs. Part man-made and part natural, the was recently featured in the second season of MALORY TOWERS, a CBBC drama based on the classic books by Enid Blyton. Beyond the sea pool, the wide sandy beach continues to an impressive vertical rock formation named Wrangle Point and at low tide links Summerleaze with Crooklets, a smaller bay to the north side of Bude, known for its rock pools and larger Atlantic swells.
These northwest-facing beaches are close to the Devon-Cornwall border and are brilliantly situated for productions on either side of the Tamar. Their closeness to the town centre of Bude ensures excellent transport links by road and rail. Owned by Cornwall Council, both beaches have large hardstanding car parks, level access and toilets facilities, with a multitude of options for nearby catering.
