Screen Cornwall is passionate about authentic storytelling from indigenous creatives that reflects our unique language, culture and heritage on screen. Building on the “Case for a Cornish Public Service Media” report, commissioned by Cornwall Council in 2019, and the recogition of the Kernewek language under Part III of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, our work in this area is just beginning.
2023 marked the start of a new phase of activity for Screen Cornwall, with a successful bid to the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund for the “Launching a Cornish Public Service Media” project which extended our existing work and started to enact the recommendations of the Case for a Cornish Public Service Media report.
The funding supported the ongoing development of our film office services – growing our offer for Cornish landowners, crew and businesses, providing skills & networking and events for the sector, that provide vital links in the value chain needed for a thriving media cluster. creation. It also enabled us to commission new work reflecting Cornwall’s distinctive language through FylmK
Finally we have built more national and international industry partnerships to create clearer channels for the distribution and marketing of work that promotes Cornish language, culture and heritage. The fund has supported our work developing audiences within and outside the region, through the Kernow Kino short film programme in cinemas, community venues and online in partnership with Creative Kernow.
In 2024 we received further funding for commissioning in Kernewek through the Level 2 Devolution Deal’s Cornish Distinctiveness deal.
In 2024 the Media Bill was also passed including as a specified Minority Language for the first time.
And in 2025, Cornwall was recognised under Part III of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, putting us on a part with the other Celtic Nations in terms of rights and protections.
We have designed a roadmap to create a Kernow Public Service Media and are talking to key institutions about funding and timelines to progress this ambition.
