Locally managed by the Screen Cornwall Film Office, this ScreenSkills project invites residents (18+) living near our production base to step into the world of television no prior experience required. Participants gain exclusive access to an “Open Doors” taster event, an essential “Need to Knows” training day, and paid work shadowing on a high-end production, all supported by bespoke 1-to-1 career development.
We work closely with Red Planet Pictures to provide paid placement opportunities on Beyond Paradise, giving local people their first taste of working in high-end TV production.
Bridging the regional skills gap by empowering the next generation of film and TV talent.
Production-Ready Pathways was an 18-month workforce development programme funded by the National Lottery through the BFI Places Fund. Designed to address skills gaps across Cornwall’s film and television workforce, the programme supported both new entrants and existing crew members to develop their skills, build industry connections and access meaningful opportunities within the screen sector.
Across three cohorts, participants benefited from tailored support delivered by the Screen Cornwall Film Office, including one-to-one mentoring, industry workshops, networking opportunities and practical career development. Together, these elements helped participants build the confidence, knowledge and professional networks needed to progress within the industry, while strengthening Cornwall’s reputation as a production-ready region.
Following a series of outreach events across Cornwall, Production-Ready Pathways welcomed three cohorts of new entrants and career starters to the programme. Each participant received tailored, year long support from the Screen Cornwall Film Office, providing a consistent professional base as they developed their careers in the screen industries.
Through a combination of industry skills training, mentoring, professional networking and practical career guidance, participants gained the knowledge, confidence and connections needed to take their next steps. From bespoke CV advice and employability workshops to industry masterclasses and on-set preparation, the programme recognised and built upon the diverse experiences each participant brought with them.
The programme was designed to ensure every cohort was truly production ready, equipping participants with the practical skills, professional etiquette and industry understanding required to work on film and television productions. Throughout the year, the Film Office drew on its extensive industry network to connect participants with meaningful placement and employment opportunities on productions filming in Cornwall and the wider South West.
Across the three cohorts, Production-Ready Pathways has helped strengthen Cornwall’s local talent pipeline, creating stronger connections between emerging talent, experienced professionals and employers while supporting the growth of a skilled, resilient workforce for the region’s screen industry.
Part of our wider mentoring strand, Step-Up Placements are tailored specifically for early-career professionals with established credits who are ready to take the next step in their career.
Participants gain an extended, on-the-job placement on a live production and are matched with a dedicated skills mentor to bridge specific knowledge gaps. This one-on-one support guides them through new responsibilities, providing the expertise and confidence they need to successfully transition into more senior roles.
As part of our commitment to fostering positive environmental change within the sector, we partnered with Leverage Point Entertainment, a leading sustainability agency, to deliver an intensive three-day training scheme.
This programme was designed to upskill mid-level and senior local crew, empowering them to champion and advocate for sustainability-embedded working practices on set. This core training aligns with wider industry initiatives, such as the BAFTA Screen New Deal, as we work towards the industry’s transition to Clean Temporary Power by 2030.
