MORDRIK – PUBLICITY STILL
Since our creation in 2019, Screen Cornwall has been focused on growing and elevating work made in Kernewek, the Cornish language, and widening the creative, on-screen and behind-the-scenes talent who have worked on films in our language.
The pillar of this work is FylmK, an annual commission for a scripted short, which has produced many films that have enjoyed festival selections and awards, as well as being important stepping stones for individual careers.
As our closest Celtic neighbours in terms of both geography and language, we have recently worked with Breton broadcasters to co-commission a short film in both Kernewek and Breizh
To extend our work in scripted, we have also invested in the early stage development of feature films in Cornish
We have also piloted other forms of commissioning including:
Children’s (Original) – PORTH by GoldenTree and Engine House VFX
Children’s (Licensed) – Cornish language versions of THE HIGHWAY RAT and SUPERWORM by Moquette Films
Comedy – DEGEMERORYON by Edward Rowe
Documentaries around language and heritage – PASS IT ON by Florence Browne as part of the REVOICE research project, Cousin Jack’s by Crow Creative
As the legal basis for increased commissioning in the Cornish language is further established, the work produced so far has also inspired a wide range of filmmakers to include Kernewek in their work, whether that’s in student films, a few lines in an English language film set in Cornwall or using our distinctive culture & heritage as a basis for scripted or unscripted stories.
