A still from Cornish language film 'Art'

Location of the month – Perranporth Airfield

Perranporth Airfield offers dramatic cliffside views, wild coastline and rich mining heritage, set within the striking St Agnes Heritage Coast.

Perranporth Airfield, resting on the edge of steep North Cornwall cliffs, offers far-reaching views of wild, surf-beaten coastline dotted with abandoned engine houses. Nestling on the St. Agnes Heritage coast, the base is bordered by yellow gorse and purple heather rising to prominence in the late summer months. Look slightly further past the edges and the floral frame gives way to an iron-rich landscape dropping to the Atlantic below.

The site started life as a Spitfire Base in the 1940’s and is now semi-operational as an airfield, with two tarmac runways and two grass runways as well as a vast aircraft hangar. Its history plain to see with wartime concrete bunkers and turn-of-the-century mineshafts.

The vast, 300-acre landscape can provide exclusive access to a large section of land, where the owners would welcome temporary structures and set builds. There is also a multitude of outbuildings for storage, workshop space or production offices, and ample space for hard-standing parking. Within the perimeter, there is also a range of camping fields hooked up to power and water, these could house Portakabins to accommodate your crew during the tourist season, and a café, which could be used for catering purposes.
