Location of the month: Gwithian
Along the north coast of Cornwall, stretched between Godrevy Lighthouse and the harbour town of Hayle, lies Gwithian beach. With its stunning views across St Ives Bay, sand-dune clad cliff tops and miles of uninterrupted beach, Gwithian is a fantastic filming location for any production.
Provided great access from the A30, Gwithian has four (one at nearby Godrevy) separate car parks equidistant across its length. The central, Cornwall Council-owned, car park has recently had its access road re-surfaced. Surrounding the car parks are also a variety of cafés serving food and refreshments for crew year-round.
The most picturesque, secluded parts of Gwithian’s sands are completely cut off at high tide so understanding how this, along with the irregular tide pattern, affects filming is vital. Low tide however provides an expanse of sand and space seldom offered elsewhere.
Claire Oakley's MAKE UP (2019) utilised Gwithian Beach and the dunes behind it. The crew used quad bikes to access the beach from the central Holiday Park for swift movement of equipment. A large set of metal steps and a concrete ramp service the beach also.
The beach has several different landowners and it is therefore key to make sure you have the correct permissions. Contact Screen Cornwall for help and advice.
