ScreenSkills offers First Break for crew

Back in July, we issued an open call for ScreenSkills’ FirstBreak scheme offering an opportunity for local craft, technical and production crew to get their first experience on a high-end TV film set. Around 30 came to the Open Doors event in Saltash, outlining the programme and to the online bootcamp that followed, leading to much demand for the 12 placements that our production partner Red Planet Pictures could offer.

The first cohort of 3 trainees joined the production in August and they were encouraged to keep a diary of the tasks they’d completed over the three weeks, people they had met and skills they’d learned which were shared with the Screen Cornwall team who was available for any questions or concerns throughout.

“On the first day in the production office this week, I found it tough to ask if anyone needed anything, but I overcame this quickly as the team were incredibly friendly and I often found myself taking on multiple tasks at once for various members of the team.”

“The last day on the camera team was pretty awesome, I got to see the ending of a storyline we had been shooting intermittently the whole time I was on set, the last shot of my last day revealing a nice little twist. I’ll really miss that job and that crew, I wish it could’ve lasted longer.”

Each trainee has a 121 at the end of their placement and are encouraged to go for the next step in their skills development and experience. ScreenSkills has just opened their TraineeFinder scheme which encourages crew with less than 12 months paid experience, with a deadline of 28th November.  Any questions or support needed on your application, please don’t hesitate to to get in touch.
